Fleetwood’s Lucky Bounce Sets Stage at PGA Championship

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina — Tommy Fleetwood experienced a stroke of luck on Sunday during the final round of the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow.
In a surprising event on the par-5 7th hole, Fleetwood’s 6-iron push veered right and appeared destined for disaster. However, the ball ricocheted off a rock wall, bouncing onto the green and back towards the cup, setting him up for a 22-foot eagle putt.
“I couldn’t believe it,” said Fleetwood, a 34-year-old British golfer. “It was my day for a little bit of luck, and I capitalized on it.”
Despite a strong start to the tournament, Fleetwood struggled on Saturday, shooting a 76 that left him 14 shots behind the leader, Scottie Scheffler. He opened the final round with hopes of improving his score.
Scottie Scheffler, the No. 1 player in the world, entered Sunday at -11 and three shots clear of Sweden’s Alex Noren. Scheffler showcased his prowess with a 65 on Saturday, making five birdies on the last five holes. “I just need to keep focused and maintain my game,” Scheffler said.
The competition remained fierce, with notable names like J.T. Poston and Davis Riley at -7, alongside Jon Rahm, who finished at -6. Meanwhile, LIV golfers Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Reed lurked in the shadows, looking to capitalize on any slip-ups.
As Fleetwood made his 22-foot eagle putt, the crowd erupted, sensing the competitive tension in the air. The PGA Championship often brings unpredictable moments, and today was no different.
“You never know what can happen in golf,” Fleetwood added, smiling as he walked off the green.
