Ian Laperrière Leaves Lehigh Valley Phantoms Coaching Position

ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Ian Laperrière will not return as head coach of the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, a source confirmed on Wednesday.
Laperrière, who led the Phantoms to the playoffs for the last three seasons, finished his four-year tenure with a 134-120-38 record and a .524 points percentage. Last season, he took the Phantoms to a deciding Game 5 against the Hershey Bears, the reigning Calder Cup champions.
“It was a mutual decision,” a source stated. “Laperrière is expected to remain within the organization in another role.” Interestingly, the Flyers recently announced Rick Tocchet as their new head coach, leading to changes at all levels of the organization.
Prior to joining the Phantoms, Laperrière served as an assistant coach for the Flyers for nine seasons. He had a notable playing career that included 1,083 NHL games, with 82 of those as a Flyer, and was part of the 2010 squad that reached the Stanley Cup Final.
“Lappy has been great for our young players,” said Flyers general manager Danny Brière. “We’re excited to have a new voice as we start this next chapter.” The Phantoms signed Laperrière to a two-year extension last season, making the news of his departure unexpected.
Brad Shaw, another coach from the Flyers’ staff, has also left the organization, joining the New Jersey Devils. The Flyers are now exploring options for Laperrière’s replacement, targeting someone who aligns with Tocchet’s vision for the team.
With several head coaching vacancies in the NHL, Laperrière is likely to pursue coaching opportunities, either as a head coach or assistant coach. The Phantoms will look to find a new leader as they aim to continue their competitive edge.
