Prepare for Memorial Day Closures on May 26, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Memorial Day, the national holiday dedicated to honoring military personnel who have died in service, will be observed on Monday, May 26, 2025. This significant day, which marks the unofficial start of summer for many Americans, will see a wide array of closures across banks, postal services, and shipping companies.
On Memorial Day, the United States Postal Service (USPS) will suspend all mail deliveries, and all post offices will be closed for retail transactions. According to USPS, only Priority Mail Express will be available, as it operates year-round, including on federal holidays.
Major banking institutions, including Bank of America, Wells Fargo, CitiBank, and JPMorgan Chase, have confirmed that their branches will be closed on Memorial Day. Other banks, such as Capital One, PNC, and Truist, will also be closed, so consumers should verify local branch hours ahead of time.
Shipping services will similarly be impacted on May 26. UPS will not offer pickup or delivery services, and many UPS Store locations may be closed. However, UPS Express Critical service will continue to operate. FedEx has also stated that most of its pickup and delivery services will be unavailable, though FedEx Custom Critical will be functioning around the clock.
In addition to these service interruptions, Memorial Day has historical roots that date back to the 1860s, when it was initially dubbed Decoration Day. Established to honor those who had died in the Civil War, the observance later expanded to commemorate all fallen U.S. military personnel.
The holiday, recognized as one of the 11 federal holidays in the U.S., will lead to closures for various non-essential federal offices, schools, and many businesses, further emphasizing its importance in American culture.
As Memorial Day approaches, residents are encouraged to plan ahead for any banking or shipping needs, given the day’s significance and associated closures.
