Cabrera Strikes Out 10 in Marlins’ Win Over Angels

ANAHEIM, California — Edward Cabrera struck out a season-high 10 batters and drove in a run as the Miami Marlins defeated the Los Angeles Angels, 3-0, on Sunday. The win marked Cabrera’s first victory of the season after seven attempts.
Cabrera, who improved his record to 1-1, pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and two walks. His strong showing included 18 swings and misses, with 11 coming from his sharp-breaking curveball.
“It was good as I’ve ever seen him,” noted Marlins coach Clayton McCullough. “He had a good run there where he was getting a bunch of punchouts.”
Miami took an early lead in the third inning when José Sanoja hit a sacrifice fly, bringing in the first run. Later, a two-out single from Gunnar Norby extended the lead to 2-0 after Sanoja stole second base.
The Marlins added another run during the fifth inning with back-to-back doubles by Sanoja and Ariel Sánchez. Angels pitcher Kyle Hendricks struggled, giving up three runs on seven hits over six innings.
Los Angeles hitters had a tough day at the plate, striking out 15 times against Cabrera and three relievers. Bender recorded a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his first career save.
The Marlins improved their away record to 8-15 and captured their first road series win of the season, adding to their total of five series wins. They are currently 21-30 overall, but they have shown promise by going 6-4 over their last 10 games.
Looking ahead, the Marlins will begin a series against the San Diego Padres on Monday night, with Ryan Weathers getting the start.
