MONACO: Williams driver Alex Albon found himself footing the bill for dinner after a tense Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday. Albon finished ninth, narrowly edging out Mercedes driver George Russell, who crossed the line in 11th place. The race saw unusual tactics as Albon and his teammate Carlos Sainz used strategy to maintain their positions.

During the race, Albon drove several seconds off the pace to create a gap for Sainz to pit without losing their positions on the challenging Monaco circuit, where overtaking is nearly impossible. This strategy prevented Russell from scoring points, ultimately leading to his frustration.

“I’m having dinner with him tonight, so he would definitely get the bill,” Russell joked after the race. Albon later shared a photo on social media holding the dinner bill, captioned: “You’re welcome, @GeorgeRussell63.”

Russell faced a drive-through penalty for cutting the Nouvelle Chicane in an attempt to pass Albon. He expressed his dissatisfaction with the situation, noting, “The strategy was for Kimi (Antonelli) and I to help each other out and gain positions throughout the race. Unfortunately, Williams and Racing Bulls opted for the same strategy.”

Albon commented on the backing-up tactics while stating, “We didn’t want to employ them, but we were left with little choice.” He acknowledged that the strategy arose after other teams, like Racing Bulls, began using similar tactics earlier in the race.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff revealed that Williams principal James Vowles had texted an apology regarding the race strategy. “We knew it was a possibility,” Albon concluded, emphasizing the competitive nature of the sport.

The Monaco Grand Prix has faced criticism in recent years for the challenges of overtaking. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner suggested that changes to the circuit layout could enhance racing opportunities in the future.
