Michael Malone Clarifies MVP Support for Jokic After Controversial Remarks

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — Former Denver Nuggets coach Michael Malone sought to clarify his stance on the NBA MVP awards during a broadcast appearance on Thursday. Following his comments praising Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, he reassured Denver fans that if he had a vote, he would have chosen Nikola Jokic.
“I did vote for him again this year, if I had a vote,” Malone stated while on ESPN before Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals. He emphasized his support for Jokic as he faced backlash from Nuggets fans upset by his previous remarks. “I want to make sure the people in Denver know that because right now, I’m getting a lot of heat back home,” he added.
His comments came shortly after Gilgeous-Alexander received the MVP trophy from commissioner Adam Silver. Gilgeous-Alexander was awarded the title on Wednesday, with Jokic finishing in second place.
Malone’s initial praise for Gilgeous-Alexander followed a stellar performance in Game 1, where Gilgeous-Alexander scored 31 points, leading the Thunder to victory. Some interpreted Malone’s remarks as disrespectful to Jokic, especially following his controversial firing from the Nuggets.
Since his departure from Denver, Malone has taken a role with ESPN, covering the NBA playoffs. He expressed his admiration for Jokic, a three-time MVP, who led the Nuggets deep into the playoffs this season before their elimination by the Thunder.
As Malone addressed the situation, he reiterated his longstanding support for Jokic. “Jokic always was focused on winning a championship rather than individual accolades,” Malone said, reinforcing his respect for his former star player.
Meanwhile, Gilgeous-Alexander continues to impress in the playoffs, scoring 38 points in Game 2 against the Timberwolves. His performance helped the Thunder secure a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference Finals.
ESPN’s report will include quotes from Malone as he transitions into his new role as an analyst while attempting to navigate the aftermath of his departure from the Nuggets.
