Kirk Cousins Absent at Falcons’ OTAs Amid Trade Speculations

Atlanta, Georgia – The Atlanta Falcons began their voluntary offseason training activities (OTAs) on Tuesday, but quarterback Kirk Cousins was notably absent, according to head coach Arthur Smith.
Cousins, 36, signed a four-year, $180 million contract with the Falcons in the 2024 offseason. Following a challenging season in which he was benched in favor of first-round pick Michael Penix Jr., speculation about his future with the team has intensified.
Last season, Cousins started 14 games for Atlanta, throwing for 18 touchdowns and 16 interceptions while completing 66.9% of his passes. Coming off a torn Achilles from the previous year, he struggled to perform at the same level as his six seasons with the Minnesota Vikings.
Pittsburgh Steelers emerged as a potential trade destination for Cousins amid ongoing discussions regarding quarterback Aaron Rodgers. NFL insider Jeremy Fowler reported that if negotiations with Rodgers fall through, the Steelers may consider Cousins as a viable alternative.
Trade discussions are complicated by Cousins’ significant salary, which includes a $40 million cap hit in 2025 and $37.5 million in guaranteed salary over the next two years. For a trade to occur, the Falcons must find a team willing to absorb part of that financial burden.
During a recent broadcast, Fowler emphasized that “Cousins is, at the very least, on the Steelers’ radar” if their pursuit of Rodgers fails. He highlighted the need for the Falcons to be flexible during negotiations, noting that substantial interest existed earlier in the offseason.
Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot stated last month, “We’re always open…we have a lot of those calls.” He added that patience is key to finding a deal that benefits the organization while keeping the door open for potential trades.
Meanwhile, the Falcons’ management must weigh Cousins’ leadership and experience against the practical implications of retaining him without a clear plan moving forward. As the speculation unfolds, it remains uncertain if Cousins will stay in Atlanta or become part of another team in the league.
