Tommy Paul Wins Match Amid Truck Repossession Drama

Tommy Paul French Open

PARIS — Tommy Paul won his first-round match at the French Open on Sunday, but he was just as eager to talk about getting back his truck that was repossessed in Florida.

The 12th-seeded Paul defeated Elmer Moller of Denmark with a score of 6-7, 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 at Court Simonne-Mathieu, amidst changing weather conditions of light rain, heavy wind, and sunshine.

After the match, Paul shared the unusual story of how his Ford F-150 was taken when he changed banks and forgot to update his automatic payments. “I missed, I think it was, like three payments,” Paul said. “They came and took it. I didn’t know it happened like that. I didn’t know how quick they would come and grab it — like in the middle of the night.”

He added that the experience felt surreal, especially since he was overseas when it happened. “Now I’m watching all these ‘repo’ shows, where they come in and swoop trucks at one in the morning. It’s definitely a funny experience. To be in Europe while it happened is even crazier. But we did get it back.”

Paul found out his truck was gone when his trainer, who was in Florida, asked him to review security camera footage for any deliveries. When he checked, he saw that there were no packages — and no truck.

“I’m like, ‘What the hell is going on? There’s a tow truck coming and taking my car!’ I thought it was stolen at first,” he recalled.

Upon realizing his truck had been repossessed, Paul shared the footage online, humorously adding a soundtrack of Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On.”
