Imane Khelif Boxing Olympic Champion

BENGALURU, India — World Boxing announced on Friday that all boxers will now be required to undergo mandatory sex testing for participation in its competitions. The decision specifically affects Paris Olympics women’s welterweight gold medalist Imane Khelif, who will not be allowed to compete until she completes the genetic sex screening.

The new regulation is set to be enforced ahead of the Eindhoven Box Cup in the Netherlands scheduled from June 5-10, 2025. World Boxing stated that Khelif could not compete in any World Boxing event until the screening is conducted, citing the need for a fair and competitive environment for all athletes.

The governing body aims to provide a level playing field after recent controversies surrounding gender eligibility. Khelif faced scrutiny during the Paris Olympics but was cleared to compete despite earlier disqualifications from previous matches. The statement from World Boxing read, “In light of plans to introduce this policy and the particular circumstances surrounding some boxers, we require this test to ensure fair competition.”

All athletes over 18 must undergo a PCR (polymerase chain reaction) genetic test, which will identify the presence of the SRY gene often located on the Y chromosome. This testing method can be conducted via nasal swab, saliva, or blood samples.

World Boxing explained that athletes determined to be male at birth are eligible to compete in male categories, while those verified as female are allowed in female categories. The organization emphasized that this policy is designed to ensure the safety and consistency of competition among genders.

Though Khelif has yet to comment, the Algerian Boxing Federation received notice from World Boxing about her disqualification from upcoming competitions due to the testing requirement. Khelif, known for her determination to defend her title, may face significant hurdles following the implementation of these new regulations.
