Evan Phillips Dodgers Relief Pitcher Surgery

Los Angeles, CA — Dodgers manager Dave Roberts announced Friday that reliever Evan Phillips will undergo Tommy John surgery next week, sidelining him for the remainder of the season and likely most of 2026.

Phillips, 30, was placed on the injured list on May 7 due to forearm discomfort after starting the season on the IL with a partially torn rotator cuff he sustained during last year’s postseason. Despite returning in mid-April and going seven appearances without allowing a run, his condition worsened.

Roberts initially expressed optimism about Phillips’ recovery. “Could he have pitched today? Absolutely,” he said on the day Phillips was placed on the IL. “Our expectation is on that 16th day, he’ll be back out there.” However, after a failed attempt to play catch this week, Phillips was moved to the 60-day injured list, indicating the severity of his injury.

“It’s starting to get a little concerning,” Roberts admitted. “I don’t know how long we can give it until he can attempt to start playing catch again.” Ultimately, it was determined Phillips would require surgery.

Phillips originally joined the Dodgers in 2021 and developed into one of their most reliable relievers. He has a career ERA of 2.22 with 45 saves across 201 appearances in Los Angeles, impressing in high-leverage situations.

The injury is a significant blow to the Dodgers, who currently have 14 pitchers on their injured list. The team continues to lead the NL West with a record above .600, despite ongoing injury challenges. Phillips’ surgery adds to their pitching woes as they seek to maintain their performance amid the numerous setbacks.

In light of Phillips’ situation, a non-tender possibility looms for next season, as he is under a $6.1 million salary and would be eligible for arbitration. The Dodgers have a history of taking chances on talented pitchers with health concerns.
