Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Wins MVP as Thunder Advance to NBA Finals

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder was named the Magic Johnson Western Conference Finals MVP on Wednesday after leading his team to a five-game series victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Thunder’s 124-94 win in Game 5 propelled Oklahoma City into the NBA Finals for the first time since 2012.
Gilgeous-Alexander, who previously won the league MVP award earlier this month, made history by becoming the first player to win both honors in the same season since the conference finals MVP was introduced in 2022. He earned the award unanimously, averaging 31.4 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 5.2 assists throughout the series.
In the decisive Game 5, Gilgeous-Alexander scored 34 points, contributed eight assists, and grabbed seven rebounds. He showcased his scoring ability throughout the playoffs, bouncing back in Game 4 with a career-high 40 points, after a disappointing 14-point performance in Game 3.
“It’s a really good feeling,” Gilgeous-Alexander said after the game. “Stuff you dream about as a kid.” His father, Vaughn Alexander, witnessed the moment and proudly held the MVP trophy during the celebration.
The Thunder displayed dominance this season, ending with a league-best record of 68-14, thanks in part to Gilgeous-Alexander’s scoring average of 32.7 points per game on 51.9% shooting. Oklahoma City’s depth and strong defense were crucial, as they ranked first in defensive rating and net rating (+12.8).
Currently, the Thunder await the winner of the Eastern Conference Finals, where the Indiana Pacers lead the New York Knicks. Game 1 of the NBA Finals is set for June 5 in Oklahoma City. If Gilgeous-Alexander continues his performance, he could potentially secure the NBA Finals MVP, further cementing his remarkable season in NBA history.
