UCLA Baseball Dominates Fresno State in NCAA Tournament Opener

LOS ANGELES, CA — The UCLA Bruins made a strong statement in their NCAA tournament opener on Friday, defeating the Fresno State Bulldogs 19-4 at Jackie Robinson Stadium. With the victory, the Bruins advance to the winner’s bracket after showcasing a powerful offensive performance.
UCLA, the national No. 15 seed, recorded season highs for hits and runs, and their dominant display included a six-run seventh inning that left the Bulldogs visibly defeated. “It wasn’t the cleanest game — it didn’t feel like the cleanest game,” said UCLA coach John Savage. “But at the end of the day, you win any way you can and certainly we did that today. So it was a good win.”
The game shifted significantly when Bruins first baseman Mulivai Levu hit a line drive that cleared the bases, resulting in a commanding 12-2 lead. Despite the score, the game had to continue, as both teams needed to complete nine innings in the tournament.
UCLA’s offense was not led by their star player, Roch Cholowsky, but rather came from the middle of the lineup which has been instrumental for the team all season. Levu, who finished with five RBIs, began the offensive onslaught with a crucial single in the first inning, and cleanup hitter Roman Martin contributed with a solo home run.
Despite struggles from starting pitcher Barnett, who lasted just over four innings, the Bruins’ bullpen held strong. Coach Savage praised junior Chris Grothues for his crucial double play that helped maintain the Bruins’ lead. UCLA now prepares to face Arizona State in the next round of the regional tournament.
