Jason Kidd Coaching The Mavericks

NEW YORK, NY — The New York Knicks intend to formally request permission to interview Jason Kidd, head coach of the Dallas Mavericks, regarding their vacant coaching position, according to league sources.

This development follows the Knicks’ recent decision to part ways with Tom Thibodeau, who coached the team for five seasons. Thibodeau led the Knicks to their first successful run in two decades but faced criticism after an Eastern Conference Finals exit at the hands of the lower-seeded Indiana Pacers.

“The Knicks need to have a replacement lined up before making such a drastic change,” said one league insider. “Kidd’s prior connections with the organization may play a significant role in their decision-making.”

Kidd has been successful in his role with the Mavericks, taking them to the NBA Finals last season where they were defeated by the Boston Celtics. However, this season has been tumultuous for Dallas, following significant injuries to key players like Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis, as well as controversy over a major trade involving star player Luka Doncic.

Tim MacMahon, an ESPN reporter, emphasized Kidd’s connections within the Knicks organization, particularly with current Knicks player Jalen Brunson, who played under Kidd during his final season with the Mavericks. “You need a relationships guy,” MacMahon stated. “Kidd has strong ties not just with Brunson but many in the Knicks’ front office.”

Kidd, who has also coached the Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks, remains under contract with the Mavericks after signing a multi-year extension last year. His future with the Mavericks is uncertain, especially given recent franchise decisions that he was not fully supportive of, including the firing of Casey Smith, who now oversees sports medicine for the Knicks.

“I’m not saying Kidd wants out of Dallas, but if the opportunity arises, he might be interested,” MacMahon added.
