Belmont Stakes Horse Racing

Saratoga Springs, NY – The 157th running of the Belmont Stakes is set for Saturday, June 7, featuring a highly anticipated rematch between Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty and Preakness winner Journalism. Both horses, along with Baeza, aim for glory in the final leg of the Triple Crown.

Sovereignty, who skipped the Preakness, appears poised for a strong performance after rallying from 16th place to win the Derby. Trainer Bill Mott indicated the decision to bypass the Preakness was made for long-term interests. Baeza, the third-place finisher in the Derby, will also return, attempting to challenge in what promises to be a competitive field.

The Belmont Stakes will take place at Saratoga Race Course, running at a distance of 1 1/4 miles. The race shifts from its traditional Belmont Park setting due to ongoing renovations. This year marks the second consecutive Belmont at Saratoga, known for its shorter distance.

Rodriguez, trained by Bob Baffert and jockeyed by Mike Smith, adds another layer of intrigue to the race. Withdrew from the Kentucky Derby due to a foot issue, Baffert stated that Rodriguez needed more time to prepare for this event. His presence may shake up expectations as he tries to prove himself against the seasoned contenders.

If either Journalism or Sovereignty claims victory, they will have the chance to achieve a Kentucky Derby and Belmont double, a feat accomplished by 11 horses in history. Likewise, 18 horses have won both the Preakness and Belmont, the last being Afleet Alex in 2005.

As bets are placed, Journalism is anticipated to be the favorite due to his impressive finish in the Preakness. However, some betting strategies suggest looking for value among the less favored horses like Baeza or Sovereignty, who may provide better returns.

The post time for the Belmont Stakes is 6:50 p.m. ET on June 7. The final lineup includes Hill Road, Sovereignty, Rodriguez, Uncaged, Crudo, Baeza, Journalism, and Heart of Honor, each vying for their spot in racing history.
