WWE Faces Big Changes as Veteran Stars See Releases

STAMFORD, Conn. — WWE has recently seen significant roster changes, raising questions about its future direction and budget practices. The latest turmoil began after WrestleMania 41 when Roman Reigns, one of WWE’s top stars, had his last televised appearance on WWE Raw.
Reigns, known as “The OTC” in the ring, has drastically reduced his in-ring appearances, wrestling predominantly on a part-time schedule. Reports indicate he only participated in six events in 2024 and three in 2025. His notable presence has, however, stirred ticket sales for the events he has been advertised to attend.
In recent months, WWE has released several beloved wrestlers, including Dakota Kai, R-Truth, and Carlito. The company is reportedly trying to cut costs, with Braun Strowman‘s exit stemming from his high salary. Roman Reigns, who makes between $15 million and $20 million per year, is in a precarious position given his sporadic appearances.
In mid-April, during an interview, Reigns hinted at retirement plans, suggesting his wrestling career might end following WrestleMania 42. This news has led to speculation about his future with WWE and whether he could be on the budget cut list. Former WWE commentator Jonathan Coachman noted the financial implications of Reigns’ situation. “He’s making over a million dollars per appearance,” Coachman said. “Is it worth it with all these superstars getting dropped?”
Other former WWE employees weighed in on the potential fate of Reigns’ contract. Tommy Carlucci expressed skepticism about Reigns’ long-term salary continuation, suggesting TKO executives would likely renegotiate his hefty deal given his limited schedule.
Additionally, WWE has displayed patterns of dismissing long-tenured talent amid roster adjustments, shown starkly in R-Truth’s release. The news shocked fans and many within the WWE, highlighting that no one is exempt from cuts regardless of their history with the company.
Sheamus and Natalya, two other veterans, are also under scrutiny due to their limited impact recently. Sheamus has struggled to find his place in WWE’s plans, and with a roster filled with emerging talent, his safety seems uncertain.
Kofi Kingston, a decorated star in WWE, faces a similar plight following R-Truth’s departure. He and his New Day teammates have not enjoyed the spotlight as they once did, raising questions about their futures as well.
As WWE continues to evolve, the implications of these releases and contracts will redefine the company landscape. The organization’s moves highlight the competitive environment as it strives to maintain profitability while delivering compelling content to its fans.
With no established timeline on when fans might see Reigns back in the ring, the wrestling world watches closely as WWE navigates these changes.
