Javier Baez Baseball Performance

DETROIT, Mich. — Javier Baez, once hailed as a rising star in Major League Baseball, is making his comeback with the Detroit Tigers after facing serious challenges in previous seasons. Baez’s journey took a turn during a return to Wrigley Field last August, where hopes for a triumphant homecoming were dashed by a lackluster performance.

After an impressive career that included a World Series win with the Chicago Cubs, Baez struggled in his time with the Tigers, particularly due to a debilitating hip injury. He admitted to ESPN that he played hurt, saying, “Honestly, all I can say is I didn’t make any excuses when I struggled for three years.” His performance declined sharply, with statistics reflecting a dramatic fall in his ability to hit fastballs and sliders.

After undergoing hip surgery, Baez focused on rehabilitation and changed his approach to his diet and training. “The first day was really hard,” he recalled. “After that, I had to learn my body from zero.” This transformation came just as the Tigers were leading an impressive push towards the postseason.

Boasting a revitalized attitude, Baez started spring training with hopes of reclaiming his position in a game changed by new talent. Manager A.J. Hinch encouraged him to embrace versatility in the field, and Baez was enthusiastic about the opportunities a position change could bring.

As the season progressed, Baez saw a resurgence in his performance, highlighted by a standout game against the Boston Red Sox, where he hit a crucial three-run homer. This moment, among others during the season, emphasized his return to form and his role as a key player in the Tigers’ lineup.

With the Tigers clinching a wild-card berth and looking competitive again, Baez dreams of contributing to a deep playoff run. “We don’t enjoy it when you’re young. Now, I’m having fun and being myself out there,” he said, reflecting on his renewed passion for the game.
