Teens in Assassination Attempt Against Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe

Bogotá, Colombia — An attempted assassination of Colombian senator and presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay has shocked the nation. The attack occurred on June 7 during a campaign event at El Golfito park in the Modelia neighborhood, where Uribe was shot three times, including twice in the head.

The alleged shooter is a 14-year-old boy who was also injured during the attack and is currently under police supervision in a hospital. Initially, investigators believed that the teenager acted alone; however, he has since agreed to cooperate with authorities, leading to significant developments in the case.

Key evidence includes surveillance footage that shows the minor arriving on a motorcycle, transferring to a gray vehicle, and receiving the firearm shortly before the attack. Authorities scrutinized two vehicles and another motorcycle seen in the area, casting doubt on whether the boy was part of a larger scheme.

An arrest warrant was issued for Carlos Eduardo Mora González, the driver of the gray vehicle, who is suspected of being a co-conspirator. Mora González was arrested on June 12 in Bogotá and faces serious charges including attempted homicide and firearm violations. Moved by his cooperation, authorities are now pursuing additional suspects, potentially leading to more than four arrests in connection with the attack.

Mora González has implicated “El Costeño,” who is purported to be the mastermind of the assassination attempt, and mentioned that orders came from a figure named “El Churco,” currently believed to be in Ecuador. Investigators are looking into the links that connect violence in Colombia to broader criminal organizations operating in the region.

As the investigation unfolds, the police increased security measures at public events, especially for politicians like Uribe who are vying for national office. This incident raises significant concerns about political violence and the involvement of minors, prompting calls for more effective measures to protect public figures and ensure accountability.

In a statement, Colombia’s Minister of Defense, Pedro Sánchez, strongly condemned the attack and offered a reward for information leading to further arrests. “Attacking a political leader is an attack on democracy,” he stated, highlighting the gravity of the incident.
