Guatemala Prepares for Gold Cup Challenge Against Jamaica

CARSON, California — The Guatemala national soccer team is gearing up for the Gold Cup, which Coach Luis Fernando Tena describes as a key opportunity to grow and prepare for the Concacaf qualifiers.
Guatemala, positioned in Group C, will face Jamaica on Monday at Dignity Health Sports Park. The team is set to play Panama four days later and will conclude the group stage against Guadeloupe on June 24.
The top two teams from each of the four groups will advance to the quarterfinals. “We hope to take advantage of the tournament to improve individually and collectively, showcasing our players and bringing joy to the thousands of ‘chapines’ in the United States,” Tena said during a press conference ahead of their tournament debut.
<p“Tournaments like the Gold Cup are crucial for Guatemala, helping us to develop,” he added. Tena expressed confidence in his team’s preparation, saying, “We expect to play well against strong rivals; we are at a very good level and training diligently.”
Guatemala’s best finish in the Gold Cup came in 1996 when they reached the semifinals. “We will try to advance as far as possible; this tournament is very important. The group is very committed and that’s the most crucial part. It’s a pleasure to work with them,” Tena concluded.
