Caitlin Clark’s Unselfish Game Shines Amid Fever’s Challenges

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana — The Indiana Fever have had a tumultuous start to the 2025 WNBA season, marked by the dual presence of star Caitlin Clark and veteran Natasha Howard. Though Howard was signed this summer to bolster the team, her fit alongside Clark has proven to be complicated.
Clark, the 2024 first overall draft pick and WNBA Rookie of the Year, aims for an up-tempo style of basketball. However, Howard’s playing style does not easily accommodate this pace, complicating their dynamics on the court. After a recent game, Clark expressed her vision for the Fever, stating, “I thought we played a good game,” emphasizing the need for teamwork and fast play. “But that’s how the Fever are supposed to play basketball. Up-tempo, unselfish, working for your teammates.”
Despite being a two-time All-Star and a WNBA champion, Howard’s performance has seen a decline since joining the Fever. Her average playing time has dropped significantly from 32 minutes in her previous two seasons to just 21.4 minutes in recent games as Indiana experiments with different lineups.
The Fever’s early successes have come with ups and downs. The team began the season with a strong win against the Chicago Sky, but since Clark’s left quad strain sidelined her, they are struggling. Clark has been actively supportive, coaching from the sidelines and keeping morale high among teammates.
With the team currently sitting at 4-5, including 2-3 without Clark, the Fever are eager for her return. Coach Stephanie White highlighted the team’s potential, stating, “The margin for error when you’re talking about playing championship-caliber teams is so small.”
In previous seasons, the Fever were a playoff staple but have faced challenges since their 2012 championship. Clark’s leadership is seen as critical to restoring that legacy. However, injuries and adjustments have made the journey rocky. Teammate Kelsey Mitchell pointed out that the beginning of the season requires readiness for unexpected challenges.
Howard spoke positively about returning to Indiana, sharing, “The fans were like, ‘We’re really happy you’re back here.’ I loved it.” The Fever’s new roster structure aims to enhance the playing experience, with a mix of veteran leadership and young talent. The team hopes that with adjustments and Clark’s eventual return, they can reclaim their former glory.
