Berlin, GermanyMagdalena Frech shocked the tennis world on June 16, 2025, by defeating sixth seed Mirra Andreeva in the first round of the Berlin Tennis Open by HYLO. The Polish player, ranked 25th in the world, won the match 2-6, 7-5, 6-0, marking her second career victory against a Top 10 player.

The match lasted 2 hours and 8 minutes, showcasing Frech’s determination after previously losing to Andreeva twice this year. “It’s always tough to play against Top 10 players, especially Mirra,” said Frech after the match. “She’s a great fighter. I knew it would be a very tough match.” After struggling in the first set, Frech rallied to triumph in the final two sets.

Frech explained her strategy during the match: “I tried to focus more on my service games, to be more patient. When I was at 5-5, 0-30, I told myself to play freely, and that made the difference.” Even though she has had a challenging season with an 8-15 record, another victory would propel her into the quarterfinals.

On the other side of the tournament, unseeded players Paula Badosa and Emma Navarro, both Top 10 players, are set for a thrilling second-round clash. They have faced each other twice before, with each player winning once. Badosa, ranked 9th, defeated Germany’s Eva Lys in her first match, while Navarro, ranked 10th, took down Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk.

Badosa, who won her first-round match 6-1, 6-3, expressed confidence ahead of her upcoming match with Navarro, stating, “I’m just looking to keep my rhythm going on this surface.” Navarro, however, aims to break the tie in their head-to-head record after her strong performance in the opening round.

The upcoming encounter between Badosa and Navarro marks a significant point in their careers, adding excitement to the already competitive tournament.
