Rabat, Morocco – Yassine Bounou, known as Bono, is set to play as Al Hilal’s goalkeeper in the FIFA Club World Cup against Real Madrid. This match is particularly significant for the Moroccan international, who was once on the brink of joining the Spanish giants.

Bounou rose to prominence during his tenure at Sevilla and was eyed by Real Madrid last summer after goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois sustained a serious knee injury. In an interview with Canal Sur Radio, Bounou confirmed that he was Madrid’s top choice for the role. “That’s what I understand,” he stated.

However, potential complications arose due to Bounou’s anticipated absence during the Africa Cup of Nations in January 2024. “The board looked at everything. I would have missed many games in a key month, and that wasn’t ideal for Madrid,” he explained. Ultimately, Real Madrid opted to loan Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea while Andriy Lunin took over the starting spot.

Bounou’s history with Real Madrid includes facing them ten times, with only two wins and a draw to his name, conceding 25 goals in those encounters. Despite this record, the 34-year-old remains excited for the challenge ahead. “I’ve met many Madrid fans on the streets in Spain. There’s always been mutual respect,” he shared. “It will be a great honour to play against them now wearing the shirt of Al Hilal, a club that is recognised around the world.”

As he gears up for this pivotal match, Bounou hopes to lead Al Hilal to an upset victory, making this encounter especially memorable.
