Nationals Assign Juan Yepez to Triple-A After Clearing Waivers

Washington, D.C. — The Washington Nationals announced today that first baseman Juan Yepez has cleared outright waivers and been assigned to Triple-A Rochester. This decision follows Yepez’s designation for assignment earlier this week to open a spot for Brady House on the 40-man roster.
Yepez, who has accumulated fewer than three years of major league service time, faces a unique situation as this marks his first career outright assignment. Since he did not have the service time needed to elect free agency, he will remain with the Nationals organization and attempt to re-establish himself with the Red Wings.
In 2024, Yepez had a respectable season, posting a .283 batting average and a 113 weighted runs created plus (wRC+) in 249 plate appearances. Despite this, his performance has declined this year, where he has struggled with a slash line of .199/.273/.301, resulting in a wRC+ of just 56. The Nationals’ acquisition of players Nathaniel Lowe and Josh Bell this offseason has contributed to Yepez’s demotion.
Both Lowe and Bell are being discussed as potential trade candidates in the lead-up to the trade deadline, creating a possibility for increased playing time at first base and designated hitter should they be moved. Yepez’s chance at capitalizing on any vacancies hinges on improving his performance while playing for Rochester.
“We believe in Juan’s talent, but he needs to show he can produce at the plate,” said a Nationals spokesperson. “This is an opportunity for him to work on his skills and come back stronger.”
The Nationals look to rebuild and reshape their roster, and Yepez’s journey reflects the unpredictability of career paths in Major League Baseball. With determination, he hopes to turn his season around and reclaim his place in the majors.
Yepez will begin his Triple-A tenure with the Red Wings soon, aiming to showcase his abilities and respond to the challenges of the past season.
