Javonte Williams Dallas Cowboys Running Back

FRISCO, Texas – Dallas Cowboys running back Javonte Williams has exceeded expectations in the early 2025 NFL season, proving to be a pivotal player for the team.

When the Cowboys signed Williams to a one-year, $3 million deal in March, many believed he would merely be a secondary option among higher-profile free agents. However, as the season unfolded, it became clear that Williams is the main contributor in the running back position.

Through two games, the 25-year-old Williams has emerged as a top performer, leading the league in expected points added per play and total expected points added. His impressive stats also include a top 10 ranking in yards after contact and a Pro Football Focus rushing grade that ranks second in the NFL, trailing only Alvin Kamara.

Moreover, Williams has tied for first in the league with 10 first downs and carries a top-10 elusive rating, which evaluates a running back’s ability to make plays independent of blocking. His success is especially crucial as the Cowboys face challenges in pass protection due to injuries on the offensive line.

Williams’ unexpected performance has shifted perceptions from skepticism to admiration. Recognizing the significance of his contributions, he has revitalized the Cowboys’ offensive strategy just as other running backs joined the roster.

In addition to Williams’ rise, the Cowboys are also adjusting their defense as they prepare to face the Chicago Bears. Defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, returning to Chicago after a difficult tenure as the Bears’ head coach, is focused on improving a struggling secondary that allowed 450 passing yards in their last game.

“You’re always disappointed when you lose, but you learn and grow,” Eberflus said, highlighting the need for his players to execute responsibilities effectively. The defense will look to tighten its coverage against the Bears, especially with starting cornerbacks dealing with injuries.

The Cowboys aim to improve their 1-1 record and continue building on the momentum created by Williams’ standout play as they face the Bears on Sunday.
