Tokyo, JapanCarlos Alcaraz is set to make his much-anticipated debut at the ATP 500 event in Tokyo this week, aiming to join an elite group of tennis legends who have won the tournament while holding the World No. 1 ranking. The Spaniard will face Sebastian Báez in his opening match on September 25.

After claiming his sixth Grand Slam title at the US Open, Alcaraz reclaimed his position as the top player in the PIF ATP Rankings. His recent performance has left him brimming with confidence, boasting a 23-4 record on outdoor hard courts this season.

“I just really wanted to come here, play great tennis, perform well, and try to win the trophy,” Alcaraz said during a pre-tournament press conference. He acknowledged the presence of strong competitors, including Taylor Fritz and Casper Ruud, who pose a significant challenge.

Historic successes in Tokyo highlight the significance of winning at this event for top players. Only five World No. 1s have achieved this feat, including legends like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Pete Sampras. Alcaraz expressed his desire to join this elite club.

Last year, Alcaraz competed at the China Open, where he outran Jannik Sinner to take home the championship. He views his participation in Tokyo not just as an opportunity for victory but also as part of his continues journey in the sport.

As excitement builds for the tournament, Alcaraz now looks forward to proving his skills on a new stage.
