Dodgers’ Kiké Hernández Expected to Play After Minor Injury

LOS ANGELES, California — Los Angeles Dodgers utility man Kiké Hernández exited Tuesday’s Wild Card Game against the Cincinnati Reds in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Dodgers were leading 8-2 when Hernández left the game due to a minor back injury.
Manager Dave Roberts confirmed after the game that Hernández is experiencing back tightness but is expected to be available for Wednesday’s matchup. “He’s playing tomorrow,” Roberts said. “He has some back tightness. Just trying to take care in this particular game, getting him ready for tomorrow and beyond.”
Hernández had a solid performance prior to his exit, going 2-for-3 with a run scored in the sixth inning. His strong postseason track record contributed to the decision to start him against Reds’ right-hander Hunter Greene. The utility man boasts a career postseason batting average of .283 with an OPS of .880.
“Kiké does what he does in October,” Roberts added. “And just across the board we just took good at-bats.” Hernández’s playoff performance has historically exceeded his regular-season numbers, showcasing his ability to thrive in high-pressure situations.
The Dodgers are now looking to close out the Wild Card series with a victory on Wednesday, which would give them a much-needed break before their next series in Philadelphia on Saturday. Hernández’s presence in the lineup is a crucial part of that strategy, especially given the team’s recent struggles in the bullpen, highlighted by a shaky eighth inning.
Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman previously acknowledged Hernández’s effectiveness in October, stating, “We’ve all seen the level of focus and energy that Kiké brings, especially in October.”
Ultimately, fans are hopeful that Hernández can continue his strong postseason performance as the Dodgers aim for advancement in the playoffs. The game is expected to take place at Dodger Stadium on Wednesday night.
