College Football Games Played Outside United States

Columbus, OH – The inaugural international college football game occurred in 1996, but the idea has gained momentum over the years. One of the most notable instances was when ESPN’s “College GameDay” preview show visited various locations for games, bringing enthusiasm for the sport around the globe.

Since its premiere in 1993, “College GameDay” has featured many top schools, travelings to iconic games each week. ESPN highlighted that over the years, traditional powerhouses like Alabama, Clemson, and Ohio State have been prominent in these matches. The show now attracts large audiences as it broadcasts from multiple locations.

This season, historical matches have taken place outside the United States, starting with Georgia Tech defeating No. 10 Florida State 24-21 in Dublin, Ireland in August. This was the first time a college football game was held in Ireland, showcasing the sport’s expanding reach.

In addition, games in Texas continue to draw considerable attention, featuring teams like Notre Dame and Texas A&M in high-stakes contests. Ohio State has made the most appearances, with a remarkable 67 times on “GameDay,” showcasing its strong fan base. Alabama follows closely behind with 60 appearances, emphasizing the intense competition among the elite schools.

As college football continues to grow, more international matchups are expected, blending local traditions with the excitement of American football.
