Osaka, Japan – Alex Eala, a 20-year-old tennis player from the Philippines, is heading to the Kinoshita Group Japan Open just a week after her last match in China. This tournament marks her next chance in the WTA 250 circuit and an opportunity to win her first WTA Tour title.

Eala enters the Japan Open with a career-high ranking of No. 54 in the world, reflecting her steady progress in professional tennis. Despite a recent early exit in Wuhan, she remains focused and eager to make a statement.

The hard courts of Osaka are where Eala thrives. Known for her powerful groundstrokes and strong baseline game, she is excited for the challenge ahead. The tournament draws tough competitors, including former rivals Emiliana Arango, Hailey Baptiste, and Cristina Bucsa, all eyeing their own breakthroughs.

Among the notable players in the draw are Naomi Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion from Japan, and Leylah Fernandez, a Canadian tennis star and 2021 US Open finalist. The competition will test Eala’s confidence and skill as she faces seasoned players.

Earlier this year, Eala won a WTA Challenger title in Guadalajara, showing that she can compete at a high level. Although her last tournament in Wuhan did not go as planned, she views the Japan Open as a chance for redemption.

A source from Eala’s team stated, “Alex knows how to reset. Every match, every surface, every tournament—she takes something from it.” The tournament starts on October 13, and Eala is determined to put up a fight.

This event is not just another tournament for her; it’s a chance to prove that a young Filipina can rise in the world of tennis. Though the defending champion, Suzan Lamens from the Netherlands, currently holds the title, Eala is focused on changing that narrative as she aims for her first WTA title.
