Al Horford Leaves Celtics for Warriors, Eyes Championship Run
LOS ANGELES — Al Horford, a veteran player who spent seven seasons with the Boston Celtics, announced he will play for the Golden State Warriors this season. The 39-year-old officially signed with the Warriors in early October, citing changes in Boston’s roster and his desire to compete for a championship as pivotal factors in his decision.
“I think that where Boston was as a team… they just weren’t in a position to offer me the opportunity that I wanted,” Horford told The Athletic. His exit follows a challenging summer for the Celtics, particularly after star player Jayson Tatum suffered a significant injury.
Horford reflected on his time in Boston, where he helped secure a championship in 2024 and became a respected figure in the community. Despite his love for the city, he felt Boston was shifting its focus differently after Tatum’s injury and the team’s further roster changes.
“Once that offseason happened and it started to progress, it became clear to me the team had different priorities,” he explained. Horford’s move to the Warriors is about more than finances; he is eager to join a team with a clear championship aspiration.
First interactions with Warriors’ stars Stephen Curry and Draymond Green sparked interest during his recruitment. “Yeah, I had communication with them, with Steph and Draymond. … it just felt right,” Horford said.
In his first weeks with the team, Horford has earned positive remarks from both players and coaches. His experience is valuable to the Warriors, and younger players appreciate his guidance. As he navigates his new environment, Horford aims to learn quickly to fit into the Warriors’ established culture.
“I’m coming in with a mindset that I’m gonna learn… just trying to fit into the system,” he said. After a successful preseason start, Horford is optimistic this marks a hopeful final chapter in his NBA career.
“At this point in my career, where I see everything, that is my expectation, just to be here,” Horford added.
