Arizona State Football Intensifies Practice After Utah Loss
TEMPE, Ariz. — Following a tough 42-10 loss to Utah, Arizona State football head coach Kenny Dillingham has made significant changes to the team’s practice regimen to emphasize physicality. The Sun Devils are now engaging in live tackling during practice, a move Dillingham described as uncommon for a Tuesday.
“I’ve gotten a little bit soft with a veteran group, and that’s 100% on me,” Dillingham said. He acknowledged that the team’s lack of physical presence showed up in game film, prompting him to adjust the practice approach.
ASU struggled in the recent game, allowing 276 rushing yards to Utah, with Utes quarterback Devon Dampier gaining 120 yards on the ground alone. Dillingham noted the urgent need to correct these issues ahead of their next game against No. 7 Texas Tech, which boasts one of the best pass rushes in the nation.
“We got guys with green jerseys that can’t have contact, took them out and said the guys that can practice, we’re tackling, we’re playing physical,” Dillingham stated. This decision highlights the need to maximize practice intensity, especially given the serious competition they are about to face.
So far, the response from players has been positive, with Dillingham noting, “They loved it. That was one of our better Tuesdays.” He emphasized that rebuilding the practice standard is crucial, and the recent changes have produced a more competitive atmosphere, highlighted by increased chatter and physical engagement among players.
As ASU prepares to take on Texas Tech, Dillingham is focused on sharpening his team for the high-stakes matchup, aiming to ensure that they can handle a formidable opponent on Saturday at 1 p.m. MST.
