NEW YORK, NY — The psychological thriller “Don’t Say a Word,” featuring Brittany Murphy and Michael Douglas, is currently one of the most popular films on Netflix, ranking #6 in the U.S. It tells the gripping story of Nathan Conrad, a psychiatrist played by Douglas, who faces a terrifying situation when his daughter is kidnapped by criminals seeking information from a traumatized patient, Elisabeth, portrayed by Murphy.

Originally released a few weeks after the September 11 attacks in 2001, the film has seen a resurgence in popularity, rectifying its initial lukewarm reception from critics. Today, “Don’t Say a Word” boasts a position in the streaming giant’s Top 10, just behind other major titles.

The film is directed by Gary Fleder and is based on the novel by Andrew Klavan. Despite past criticisms on Rotten Tomatoes, where it holds a 23% critic score and 49% audience score, many new viewers are discovering the film.

<p"I found it engaging and suspenseful," said a viewer on Rotten Tomatoes, praising its cinematography and performances. The film also features notable actors like Sean Bean, Famke Janssen, and Oliver Platt, contributing to its dramatic tension.

Though the plot centers around the psychological thriller trope of a kidnapped daughter, critics noted its potential shortcomings in originality. Some highlighted the film’s pacing and strong performances that help draw audiences in, even if it lacks groundbreaking elements.

During its theatrical run, “Don’t Say a Word” grossed just over $100 million against its $50 million budget, showcasing its effectiveness in reaching viewers despite earlier setbacks. With its return to Netflix, it seems poised to regain traction among both old fans and new viewers, reflecting changing audience preferences for nostalgic thrillers.
