CHENNAI, India — Incessant rains in Chennai forced the cancellation of all matches scheduled for Monday at the Chennai Open, held at the SDAT Tennis Stadium in Nungambakkam. Tournament director Hiten Joshi announced that ten matches, including seven singles and three doubles, were called off following three inspections at 3 PM, 4 PM, and 4:45 PM.

According to Joshi, the matches will be rescheduled for Tuesday at noon, contingent on weather conditions. ‘All 16 matches will be played tomorrow,’ Joshi told reporters, mentioning that an additional court will be made available for play.

Shortly before the cancellations, it appeared that matches could start after a brief period without rain. However, as the clock struck 4:45 PM, the rain resumed, leading to the final decision to cancel for the day. Meteorological reports indicated that heavy rain was likely to continue in Chennai, with Cyclone Montha expected to intensify and impact the region.

Tuesday’s lineup will feature several intriguing matches, including a much-anticipated conflict between rising stars Maaya Rajeshwaran and Shrivalli Bhamidipaty. Additionally, Sahaja Yamalapalli will face Priska Nugroho of Indonesia in a match that was moved to Court 1.

Despite the disruption, organizers are hopeful for better weather on Tuesday, allowing fans to witness the thrilling matchups scheduled as the tournament progresses.
