Dodgers Consider Ohtani in Game 7 Strategy
TORONTO — Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts is weighing the possibility of using Shohei Ohtani as an opener or even as an outfielder in Game 7 of the World Series if his team pushes the series to the limit.
Ohtani, who threw 93 pitches in Game 4, could potentially be available as a reliever this weekend. However, there are significant implications if he enters the game in various roles. If Ohtani pitches after starting as a designated hitter, the Dodgers would lose their DH spot, requiring him to take on a position afterward to remain in the game. Conversely, if he starts as a pitcher, he can stay in the game as a DH.
“I think we would consider everything,” Roberts said in a press conference Thursday, one day before Game 6. “It’s more of just kind of doing whatever we can to get through tomorrow and then pick up the pieces and then see what’s the best way to attack a potential Game 7. So everything should be on the table and will be, for sure.”
Roberts also noted that he planned to discuss the game strategy with Ohtani later that day. Interestingly, Ohtani has never pitched in relief during his Major League Baseball career, although he did have a few relief appearances back in Japan with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters.
In addition to his pitching, Ohtani participated in on-field batting practice on Thursday, which is uncommon for him, showcasing his hitting capabilities as he sent balls flying off the hotel located behind center field.
During the postseason, Ohtani has maintained a .250 batting average with 8 home runs, 14 RBIs, and 14 walks, leading to an impressive 1.109 OPS. On the mound, he is 2-1 with a 3.50 ERA and has struck out 25 batters over 18 innings. Notably, he made seven outfield appearances with the Angels in 2021, prior to a rule change that allowed starting pitchers to remain as designated hitters after leaving the mound.
