Suns Hand Spurs First Loss of the Season in 130-118 Victory
PHOENIX, Ariz. — The Phoenix Suns handed the San Antonio Spurs their first loss of the season with a decisive 130-118 victory on Sunday night at the Mortgage Matchup Center.
Devin Booker led the Suns with 28 points and 13 assists, showcasing his talent for playmaking and scoring. Ryan Dunn and Grayson Allen supported with 17 points each as the Suns improved to a 3-4 record this season. This victory also marked back-to-back wins for the Suns, who defeated the Utah Jazz 118-96 just two nights earlier.
San Antonio started strong this season, winning its first five games, but faced challenges against Phoenix’s hot shooting. The Suns made 19 of 33 attempts from three-point range, achieving an impressive shooting percentage of 57.6 percent from behind the arc. The Spurs, in contrast, struggled, making just 10 of 41 three-point attempts.
Despite being without key players Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks, the Suns managed to dominate the game. Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs’ standout rookie, had an uncharacteristically off night, scoring only nine points on 4-of-14 shooting. This marked the first time in his career that he was held under 10 points since October 30, 2024.
The Suns built an extensive lead, going up by as much as 31 points in the third quarter. By halftime, they led 70-52, with Booker contributing 14 points and nine assists before the break. In contrast, Wembanyama managed only two points in the first half.
SPURS player Stephon Castle notched a team-high 26 points along with seven rebounds, but the team couldn’t mount a significant comeback despite a late push in the fourth quarter. Coach Mitch Johnson acknowledged the need for a better start, stating, “We did not start with the proper approach, and it is hard to fight an uphill battle.”
Looking ahead, the Spurs will face the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night. The Suns will next travel to play the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday.
