Michigan Basketball Prepares for Wake Forest After Strong Opener
DETROIT – The Michigan Wolverines are gearing up to face Wake Forest on November 11 after an impressive season opener. The Wolverines defeated Oakland 121-78 on November 3, marking their highest points in a season opener in program history.
After a week of preparation, Coach Dusty May expressed confidence in his team’s progress as they face a challenging Wake Forest team. The Demon Deacons, currently 2-0, previously defeated Michigan last season with a narrow margin of 72-70 in Greensboro, North Carolina.
May provided updates on player health, noting that star transfer Yaxel Lendeborg is nearing full recovery and teammate Winters Grady has returned to practice. Additionally, L.J. Cason has shown notable improvements, which raises hopes for a stronger lineup against Wake Forest.
Key players for the Demon Deacons include Juke Harris and Tre’Von Spillers, who have significantly contributed to their early season successes. Their development from last year poses additional challenges for Michigan on the court.
Despite their high-scoring debut, May emphasized the need for improvement on defense, particularly after allowing high-efficiency shots in their last game. The Wolverines must enhance their ability to manage turnovers and defend against versatile big men like Spillers.
Historically, Michigan has struggled against Wake Forest, holding an 0-2 record. However, the team’s home-court support at Little Caesars Arena, where they remain undefeated, provides an opportunity to change their fortunes in the “Wolverine-Demon Deacon Challenge.”
As they prepare for this pivotal matchup, Coach May expressed optimism about the team’s readiness. “I think we’re better in a lot of areas since last week,” May said. “We’re not where we need to be, but I do think we’re inching in the right direction.”
