Nuggets’ Spencer Jones Emerges as Key Defensive Player in NBA Season
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Spencer Jones is making his mark as a critical defensive asset for the Denver Nuggets this season. The 24-year-old is in his second year with the team on a two-way contract, shifting from the bench to the court when the Nuggets urgently need a defensive stop.
“I’m always kind of scurrying to get my pants off,” Jones joked about his transition from warm-ups to game action. He understands he must quickly adapt from inactivity to maximum intensity, often checking into games at unpredictable moments.
Jones not only faces the challenge of limited time on the court, but he also must defend against some of the league’s most talented scorers. He recently guarded stars like Devin Booker and Pascal Siakam, holding adversaries to a 1-for-9 shooting record while he defended them last week.
“You just have to come in, guard one of the better players out there,” Jones said. “You don’t really know when you’re gonna come in or go out. It’s just always being ready.” His performance, despite being brief, significantly impacts the game.
Coach David Adelman praised Jones’s hard work. “He earned the respect of the guys during the summer. It’s such a nice guy to have, bringing energy,” he said.
Jones prepares for games by reviewing video clips of potential matchups. He tries to anticipate who he will guard but acknowledges that things can change depending on the game’s flow. “It’s gonna be spotty, just because we’re so deep,” he added.
With his impressive 6-foot-7, 225-pound build and strong wingspan, Jones can defend multiple positions. In the Nuggets’ home opener, he effectively guarded Booker during crucial moments of the game, even forcing a shot-clock violation.
Despite his gradual rise, Jones is realistic about his role and aspirations. He is focused on proving himself to earn more playing time and potentially secure a spot in the NBA. Denver currently has an open spot on its roster, which Jones hopes to fill in the future.
“It’s all about just getting the minutes and proving yourself,” he said. “If you do that enough times and gain trust, you’ll get that opportunity.” As he continues to refine his skills and find moments to shine, his future with the Nuggets remains promising.
