LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska running back Emmett Johnson was named one of 13 semifinalists for the Maxwell Award on Tuesday. The award, given by the Maxwell Football Club, recognizes the top collegiate player in the country.

Johnson, who has had a standout season, ranks second nationally in rushing yards with 1,131 and leads the nation with 1,431 total yards from scrimmage. He is one of only two running backs on the semifinalist list, joining Jeremiyah Love from Notre Dame.

This season, Johnson has scored 11 rushing touchdowns and has 36 receptions for 300 yards, making him the second among FBS running backs in receptions. He has recorded six 100-yard rushing games, including three consecutive performances. His impressive outing against UCLA on Nov. 8 featured both rushing and receiving yards exceeding 100 for the first time in Nebraska history.

“It’s a great honor to be recognized among such talented players,” Johnson said. “I’m just focused on helping my team win.”

With a record of 7-3, Nebraska has seen its highest win total in a regular season since 2016, thanks in part to Johnson’s contributions. Johnson is also one of six players from the Big Ten on the semifinalist list, which includes players like Makai Lemon (USC) and Fernando Mendoza (Indiana).

The winners of the 89th Maxwell Award and the 31st Chuck Bednarik Award will be announced during the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show later this season.

In recognition of his performance against UCLA, where he accounted for 232 yards and three touchdowns in a 28-21 victory, Johnson received the Maxwell Club National Player of the Week award. “I’m proud of my performance, but I couldn’t have done it without my teammates,” he added.
