KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs are struggling as the playoffs approach, particularly on offense. After starting the season with high expectations, the team has faced challenges scoring, especially in close games. They are currently 0-5 in games decided by one score.

Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy addressed these issues during a media session on Thursday. He emphasized the importance of mindset and finishing plays. “You have to be able to finish — and that’s what we talked about at the beginning of the week when we went back and reviewed the tape,” Nagy said.

During their bye week, the coaching staff examined their offensive strategies. Nagy noted the need for ownership over play calls and execution. He explained that when plays are called, it is crucial for the team to run the right routes and ensure every detail is attended to during critical moments, especially in the waning minutes of close games.

“We didn’t do it — plain and simple — and that’s been our focus,” Nagy mentioned, recognizing the challenges the team faces with their 0-5 record in tight games. He added, “We all want to make sure that we’re locking in on our jobs.”

A significant miscue hampered the offense in a recent game when quarterback Patrick Mahomes failed to connect on two deep shots during the first drive. Overthrows on plays that should have led to big gains frustrated Nagy. “We’ve got to hit on those when we throw them,” he said. “That’s what Pat was upset about with himself.”

Nagy remarked on Mahomes’ capability, stating, “He’s one of the most accurate quarterbacks in the history of this game.” He also acknowledged that connecting on deep throws is critical, especially early in games. However, the offensive line has shown vulnerability as well, struggling against opposing defenses.

One key moment came late in a recent fourth quarter when the Broncos executed a successful blitz that resulted in a sack and ended the Chiefs’ last chance to score. Nagy credited the Broncos for their effective defensive strategy saying, “They did a good job with what they pressured.”

As the season progresses, the Chiefs must find solutions to their offensive woes if they hope to make a playoff push. Consistent execution and overcoming these challenges will be crucial as they enter the final weeks of the season.
