Aaron Ekblad Hopes to Stay with Florida Panthers Amid Stanley Cup Final

EDMONTON, Canada — As the 2025 Stanley Cup Final unfolds, Aaron Ekblad is focused on more than just hockey. The Florida Panthers defenseman is determined to continue his career with the franchise that drafted him first overall in 2014. At 29, this is his 11th season with the team, and he’s eager to leave a lasting legacy.
Ekblad’s dedication to the Panthers was evident in a recent interview. ‘I live and breathe for the Florida Panthers,’ he asserted. With the team leading the Finals series 1-0 after a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory in Game 1, Ekblad’s commitment has never been more apparent. As a pending free agent, he is hopeful about signing a new contract.
This postseason has become a significant moment for Ekblad, who has battled through injuries and setbacks throughout his career. Having previously faced serious injuries, such as a torn oblique and repeated shoulder dislocations, he now finds himself healthier than ever, thanks to the Panthers’ comprehensive support system.
When asked about the emotional toll of potentially ending his time with the Panthers, he replied, ‘It’ll have to be after the season. Obviously a thought one way or another has come into my mind. But at the end of the day, we’ll see how it plays out.’
This season has been a rollercoaster for Ekblad, who contributed 33 points in 56 games despite facing a suspension for inadvertently taking a banned substance. He adapted by training independently, developing his skills by observing teammates, particularly defense partner Gustav Forsling.
‘It’s been a bit of a roller coaster for myself, and I’m happy to be in this situation now,’ said Ekblad, reflecting on the challenges he faced this season. He expressed gratitude toward the organization for its commitment to developing competitive talent and ensuring the franchise is a destination for players.
While the financial implications of free agency loom large, with the Panthers potentially facing cap constraints, Ekblad’s resolve to remain with the team reflects his passion for the franchise. ‘I’ve given everything I can and will continue to give everything that I can to this team,’ he stated. As he gears up for an intense series, the desire for a second Stanley Cup motivates him further.
As the Final progresses, all eyes will be on Ekblad and the Panthers as they aim for victory and the potential future of their core players, including the pursuit of another championship.
