Aaron Gordon Finds Strength Through Family After Tragic Loss

DENVER, Colorado — Aaron Gordon, forward for the Denver Nuggets, has turned to basketball and family for solace following the tragic death of his brother, Drew Gordon, in May 2024. Drew, who was also a basketball player, died in a two-vehicle crash in Oregon at the age of 33.
Gordon’s family gathered for a crucial playoff game against the Los Angeles Clippers when they witnessed a thrilling game-winning basket by Aaron. Angela Gordon, Drew’s widow, was heartbroken they had to leave early, but they cheered loudly when Aaron secured the Nuggets’ 101-99 victory at the buzzer. “I was in tears. Just incredible,” she said in a text to Andscape.
Prior to his untimely passing, Drew had a notable basketball journey, having played for UCLA and New Mexico before going undrafted in 2012. He briefly played for the Philadelphia 76ers and spent time overseas in various leagues. Aaron, who was selected fourth overall in the 2014 NBA draft, often looks back at Drew’s perseverance in the face of challenges in professional sports.
“Being the older brother, I couldn’t be more pleased with how he has progressed as a player and individually,” Drew told Yahoo! Sports about Aaron back in 2014. After a successful collegiate career, Drew returned to the U.S. from Ukraine just before the outbreak of the war with Russia and anticipated a role in professional basketball after retirement.
Following his death, the Gordon family became even closer, helping each other cope with their grief. “We really rallied around each other,” said Drew’s sister, Elise, who now serves as Aaron’s co-agent.
In honor of Drew, Aaron switched from No. 50 to No. 32 this season, reflecting the impact his brother had on his life. “It means he is with me,” Aaron remarked, expressing his commitment to be there for Drew’s children, Zayne and Brody.
Aaron has taken on a paternal role, spending time with his nephews and supporting them through their loss. He convinced Angela and the boys to move to Denver, where they frequently attend Nuggets games together. “There are truly no words to describe how much [Aaron] means to me and the kids,” Angela said.
This season has been particularly tough for Aaron, both personally and professionally. The Nuggets faced injury challenges and internal team issues, and he continues to navigate the pain of losing his brother. “What has been getting me through is the game of basketball and my love for my brother’s children,” he said.
As Aaron focuses on being a role model, he is deeply aware of the lasting impact he can have on his nephews, particularly as their father is no longer present. “I want [Brody] to grow up and see a strong, resilient male figure in his life,” Aaron added.
Angela believes Aaron has been an invaluable source of support. “He is the light. He is love… he has shown up and made our kids smile daily,” she expressed. With the love and support from family, Aaron Gordon continues to honor his brother’s legacy both on and off the court.
