Aaron Nola: From Draft Pick to Phillies Star

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Aaron Nola, a highly regarded pitcher from Louisiana, has defied the odds by becoming a mainstay for the Philadelphia Phillies. Drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2011, Nola chose to attend Louisiana State University (LSU) instead. Three years later, the Phillies picked him 7th overall, a decision they did not regret as he quickly rose through the ranks.
Nola’s baseball journey began at LSU, where he earned numerous accolades, including the 2014 National Pitcher of the Year award. After signing with the Phillies, he was assigned to Clearwater and quickly progressed to Reading, then Lehigh Valley. By June 2015, he made his debut in Philadelphia against the Tampa Bay Rays.
In his first MLB game, Nola faced the challenge of starting in front of a live crowd. He demonstrated composure by striking out six batters and only allowing one earned run despite the Phillies’ bats remaining silent during the game, leading to a loss.
Baseball writer Todd Zolecki praised Nola’s maturity and presence on the mound, stating, “He brings a very mature demeanor.” Writer Bernie Pleskoff noted Nola’s readiness for the major leagues, emphasizing his immediate impact as a pitcher.
Nola’s early career was marked by a strong performance, including a 3.59 ERA and a 6-2 record within his first season. His ability to maintain poise and breed confidence among teammates set him apart from others who might be marked as mere prospects.
As he continues his career, Nola has proven that he is not just another pitching prospect, but a vital asset to the Phillies. His journey from a draft pick to a key player reflects his talent and hard work, showcasing the extraordinary journey some players can take in the world of baseball.
