NEW YORK, NY — Aaron Rodgers‘ time with the New York Jets appears to be coming to an end as the franchise reportedly plans to move on from the 41-year-old quarterback. After two disappointing seasons, Jets management has informed Rodgers that he will not be retained.
Rodgers, who joined the Jets in 2023 with high expectations, had his debut season cut short due to a torn Achilles tendon just four plays into the team’s opener. In the 2024 season, he played all 17 games but could not elevate the Jets beyond a 5-12 record, prompting significant changes within the organization.
Fox Sports reported that Rodgers flew to New Jersey last week for discussions on his future with the Jets. It was during this meeting that he learned the team was moving in a different direction. The Jets’ decision comes as they continue to reassess their options following the recent hiring of a new head coach and general manager.
“We tried to do something special. Injuries took part in that, took away a lot of time,” Jets captain C.J. Mosley said of Rodgers’ impact with the team. “He did do some great things this year, getting his 500th (passing) touchdown.”
Rodgers completed the 2024 season with 3,897 passing yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. While these numbers rank among the best in Jets history, they fall short of the high-level performance that defined his career with the Green Bay Packers.
The Jets are expected to explore options at quarterback ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft, where they hold the No. 7 overall pick. Teams like the Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns, and Las Vegas Raiders are also seeking quarterbacks. The Jets may consider using the draft to select a young prospect while exploring short-term options, such as Rodgers, if he chooses to continue playing.
“I know I can still play,” Rodgers said after a season-ending win over the Miami Dolphins, where he achieved his 500th career touchdown. “It just comes down to the desire on their side and, ultimately, my desire to play.”
Despite the likelihood of parting ways with the Jets, interest surrounds Rodgers’ next potential landing spot. Possible teams include the Pittsburgh Steelers, who may view him as a veteran solution to bolster their chances, and the Los Angeles Rams, amid speculation about Matthew Stafford’s future.
“This thing is not about Aaron Rodgers,” new Jets coach Aaron Glenn said, emphasizing a broader focus on the team’s needs during the transition period.
As Rodgers weighs his options for a potential 21st NFL season, the impending decision is poised to attract significant attention, given his status as a four-time MVP and one of the league’s most talked-about figures.
