Abner Surprises in Brazil’s Latest Squad for World Cup Qualifiers
In a move that has sparked discussions among football enthusiasts, Abner, a left-back from Lyon, has been included in Dorival Júnior‘s recent selection for the Brazilian national team. At 24 years old, Abner is set to make his debut as a starter for the Seleção in the upcoming matches against Chile and Peru, scheduled for October 10 and 15, respectively.
Abner began his career at Ponte Preta, progressing through their youth system from the under-15 team to the professional squad. Following a successful stint where he played almost 150 games with Athletico Paranaense, Abner was transferred to the Spanish club Real Betis for 7 million euros, equivalent to approximately 38.8 million Brazilian reais, for a 70% stake in his rights. After two seasons in Spain, he moved to Lyon for a reported fee of 8 million euros, around 47.64 million reais, with a contract extending until 2029.
Known for his physical presence, standing 1.81 meters tall, Abner is a left-footed player praised for his defensive solidity and ability to contribute to offensive plays with his speed. His unexpected inclusion in the national team aligns with Brazil’s current need to strengthen its campaign in the World Cup qualifiers, where the team ranks fifth, with three victories, one draw, and four losses.
The Brazil vs. Chile match will take place on October 10 in Santiago at the National Stadium, while the encounter with Peru is scheduled for October 15 at the Mané Garrincha Stadium in Brasília. Brazil is striving to secure a top-six finish in the qualifiers to ensure direct entry to the World Cup, with the current leader being Argentina, which boasts 18 points from six wins and two draws.
Rivellino, a former football player, expressed his surprise at Abner’s call-up during the “Cartão Verde” program. “The Abner, nothing against the kid, but I never saw him, don’t know him, never saw him play,” Rivellino remarked. He also mentioned younger player Igor Jesus, noting the rising player’s potential in the team.
Discussing the prospects of Dorival Júnior’s continued tenure as Brazil’s head coach, Rivellino highlighted the importance of the upcoming qualifying matches. “I think it will depend a lot on the qualifiers, if he passes, he can still continue the work,” he stated, addressing the uncertainty that accompanies the Brazilian national team’s managerial decisions.
