ACC Showdown: UNC Dominates Virginia as NC State Shines Offensively

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — In an exhilarating night of Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) action on February 22, 2025, the University of North Carolina (UNC) took a commanding victory over the University of Virginia, winning 81-66. Meanwhile, North Carolina State University (NC State) managed to secure a critical win against Wake Forest, 85-73, showcasing a promising performance amidst a season of struggles.
UNC surged ahead early, racing to a 21-2 lead against Virginia, which struggled to keep pace throughout the game. Jae’Lyn Withers scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, contributing significantly to the Tar Heels’ success. Ven-Allen Lubin also added 14 points and six boards, demonstrating tremendous teamwork. Coach Hubert Davis adjusted his line-up to a more traditional format after experimenting with a four-guard lineup earlier in the season, leading to a more stable performance.
“We had a strong focus from the start, and that set the tone for the game,” said Withers. “Staying disciplined and working together really helped us.”
On the other hand, NC State found its offensive rhythm, with freshman Paul McNeil stepping up with 24 points in his first career start. Supporting him, Dontrez Styles added 22 points, helping the Wolfpack shoot a solid 50 percent from the field, including 41 percent from three-point range (13-32). Despite their struggle throughout the season, NC State’s performance raised hopes for a successful finish.
“We know we can play at this level, and it showed tonight,” said McNeil. “The atmosphere pushed me to perform, and I’m excited for what’s next.”
Wake Forest, however, will find themselves on the NCAA Tournament bubble after this loss, needing strong performances in the upcoming ACC Tournament to secure a spot. Cameron Hildreth paced the Demon Deacons with 16 points, but Hunter Sallis struggled from the floor with only 13 points on a .300 shooting percentage.
Elsewhere in the ACC, Clemson University secured a solid win against Southern Methodist University (SMU), 79-69, with Jaeden Zackery leading the Tigers with 19 points. Clemson led comfortably throughout much of the second half, despite a late rally from SMU. Viktor Lakhin contributed 16 points and six rebounds, solidifying a commendable effort from the Tigers.
Louisville overcame Florida State in a tight contest, finalizing a score of 89-81. Chuckie Hepburn returned from injury to set a school record by hitting 17 of 19 free throws, finishing with 29 points and five steals. J’Vonne Hadley also aided the Cardinals with 18 points and 11 rebounds, demonstrating a holistic team effort despite the challenges posed by Florida State’s Jamir Watkins’ 23-point showing.
Notre Dame continued its winning ways against the University of Pittsburgh, overcoming a tight game that was tied at 54-54 with just minutes left before closing it out 76-72. Tae Burton emerged as a key player for the Irish, contributing 21 points as they managed the game effectively without injured stars Matt Allocco and Braeden Shrewsberry.
The games highlighted how closely contested the ACC can be, with each team battling for valuable standings as the season approaches its conclusion. Looking ahead, UNC’s next challenge presents itself on February 26 when they visit Florida State, while NC State hopes to build momentum in their upcoming matches as well.
