COLLEGE STATION, Texas — With their season ending in a second-round NCAA Tournament defeat to Michigan, Texas A&M fans are bracing for potential coaching changes. Head coach Buzz Williams is reportedly interested in the head coaching position at Maryland, should it become available, according to a source relayed by ESPN’s Jeff Goodman.

The speculation comes amidst rumors that current Maryland coach Fred Willard could be on his way out. Williams, who has led the Aggies to moderate postseason success, maintains a $2 million buyout that will decrease to $1 million as of April 1, which could facilitate a transition if he chooses to pursue opportunities elsewhere.

The Aggies finished their season with a roster heavily reliant on eight seniors, making next year’s rebuilding efforts more daunting for Williams. “This group means so much to me,” said Williams following their loss. “I’m incredibly proud of everyone, not just the players, but the staff.”

Despite his achievements with Texas A&M, including leading the team to two NCAA Tournament appearances and a spectacular run to the National Invitational Tournament championship in 2022, Williams has not been able to match the postseason success he experienced earlier in his career at Marquette, where he reached two Sweet 16s and an Elite 8.

In a heartfelt moment after the Michigan loss, senior guard Manny Obaseki praised Williams, stating, “He’s one of the greatest coaches of all time. He’s changed each and every one of our lives.” Obaseki’s words reflect Williams’ significant impact on his players and the program. “I love you. No matter what, I know you’re going to be one call away, one text away,” Obaseki added.

As the Aggies begin their search for a new head coach, the team faces key decisions in a critical offseason that could shape its future. With Williams seeking new opportunities, Texas A&M will need to build on the foundation established during his tenure while also preparing for the challenges ahead.
