Al-Ahli Secures Final Spot with Win Over Al-Hilal in AFC Champions League

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia, April 29, 2025 – Al-Ahli defeated Al-Hilal 3-1 in the semifinals of the AFC Champions League Elite on Tuesday, securing their spot in the final for the first time since 2012.
Al-Ahli struck early, with goals from Roberto Firmino in the ninth minute and Ivan Toney in the 27th minute, putting them in a commanding position. After Toney’s goal was initially ruled offside, a VAR review overturned the decision, much to the delight of the home fans.
Al-Hilal managed to pull one back just before halftime when Salem Al-Dawsari scored in the 42nd minute. However, their hopes were dashed when defender Kalidou Koulibaly received a second yellow card, leaving his team with 10 men for the final 30 minutes.
Despite the setback, Al-Hilal’s substitute Hamad Al-Tuhayfan earned a penalty for his team late in the game. However, Franck Kessie’s attempt was saved by goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. In stoppage time, substitute Feras Al-Brikan sealed the victory for Al-Ahli, scoring the third goal.
Al-Ahli’s coach, Matthias Jaissle, expressed pride in his players, saying, “It was a fantastic evening. I am so, so proud of each of the players. We knew it would be a hard fight against Al-Hilal, but I’m really happy with how we dealt with that.”
Meanwhile, Al-Hilal coach Jorge Jesus criticized the officiating, stating, “The referee wasn’t at as good a level as the teams. I think he was the one behind us having such a bad performance.” Jesus took accountability for the loss, admitting, “I’m the one responsible.”
Al-Ahli will play in the final on Saturday, where they await the winner of the matchup between Al Nassr and Kawasaki Frontale.
