Ahmed Hassanein Poised for Historic NFL Draft Selection

BOISE, Idaho — Ahmed Hassanein, a standout on Boise State‘s defensive line, could make history this weekend as the first Egyptian ever chosen in the NFL Draft. Despite his achievements, those close to him believe he has not yet reached his full potential.
The Cairo native, who had no prior experience with football until he moved to Southern California almost seven years ago, has made remarkable strides in the sport. Boise State head coach Spencer Danielson praises Hassanein, calling him the best edge rusher to emerge from the university’s Mountain West Conference in years.
“Knowing his character, knowing his work ethic, I’d be willing to bet everything on him,” said Cory Besch, Hassanein’s half-brother. “Any team that invests in him is getting not just a football player but someone who will represent their culture better than any other prospect.”
Projected to be picked in the late rounds of the draft, Hassanein accumulated 24 sacks during his time at Boise State, most of which came after he became the starting edge rusher in his junior year. He earned first-team all-conference honors in both the 2023 and 2024 seasons and served as a team captain in his senior year.
In less than a decade, Hassanein has adapted to life in the United States, learning English and football while overcoming cultural challenges in California and Idaho. He has also transformed his faith from Islam to Christianity, finding his voice as a leader both on the field and within the community.
While teams consider selecting Hassanein, Coach Danielson emphasizes his skills as an athlete. “Ahmed’s a phenomenal football player in addition to his inspiring story,” he said. “He’s going to impact the NFL significantly. You’re not just getting a great narrative; you’re getting a top-tier football player.”
