Ajax Holds Slavia Prague to a 1-1 Draw in Europa League Clash
Ajax Amsterdam secured a 1-1 draw against Slavia Prague in the UEFA Europa League match held at the Eden Arena in Prague on Thursday. The match saw Ajax take an early lead with a penalty goal from Branco van den Boomen, before Slavia Prague’s Tomas Chory equalized in the second half.
Branco van den Boomen gave Ajax the advantage in the 18th minute, scoring from the penalty spot after teammate Christian Rasmussen was fouled by Slavia defender Ondřej Zmrzlý. The Dutch team held control in the first half, with Slavia Prague struggling to create significant threats to Ajax goalkeeper Remko Pasveer.
Brian Brobbey had two prime opportunities to extend Ajax’s lead, but missed both, striking wide, much to the frustration of the visitors. In the 51st minute, Pasveer’s exceptional save from Simeon Michez’s deflected strike kept Ajax in front.
Slavia Prague made tactical substitutions in the second half, turning the tide in their favor. This strategic move culminated in Tomas Chory’s towering header in the 67th minute, leveling the score at 1-1. Ajax’s position weakened in the 75th minute when Youri Baas was handed his second yellow card, leaving the team to defend with ten men for the remaining minutes.
The draw leaves both Ajax and Slavia Prague with four points each in their group, after two games played. Ajax previously triumphed over Besiktas, while Slavia Prague defeated Ludogorets. The match was noted for its physical gameplay, with numerous fouls committed by both teams.
Ajax manager Francesco Farioli had to navigate the match without several key players, including Steven Berghuis and Wout Weghorst, making way for replacements like Mika Godts and Christian Rasmussen. The team now prepares to face FC Groningen in a domestic league match on October 6, before traveling to Azerbaijan to meet Qarabag in their next Europa League fixture.
