Ajax Triumphs In Record Penalty Shootout

In a nail-biting match on Thursday, Ajax pulled off a stunning victory against Panathinaikos during the Europa League qualifying round. The shootout turned into a real spectacle, with Ajax winning 13-12 after a staggering 34 penalties were taken.

The drama unfolded at Johan Cruyff ArenA, where Ajax started strong, winning the first leg 1-0 in Greece. However, in a twist of fate, Panathinaikos equalized late in the second leg, scoring in the 89th minute, which pushed the match into extra time.

During the tense penalty shootout, both teams displayed incredible skill, each taking 17 penalties before Ajax’s Anton Gaaei slotted home the winning kick. Ajax goalkeeper Remko Pasveer was the star of the night, saving five penalties and even contributing to the score by converting one himself.

Ajax’s coach, Francesco Farioli, praised his team’s spirit and effort, saying it was a fantastic match even leading up to the stress of the penalty shootout. He noted that, while the players weren’t perfect, their dedication could not be questioned.

With this victory, Ajax moves on to face Polish side Jagiellonia Bialystok in the playoff round later this month, looking to continue their pursuit of success in the Europa League.
