Ajaz Patel, the New Zealand cricketer, has showcased his skills as a spin bowler in the recent matches against Sri Lanka. Patel, who has a record of 70 Test wickets at an average of 28.50, has only played in 17 of the 45 Tests New Zealand has participated in since his debut. This is largely due to New Zealand’s preference for a seam-focused strategy at home. When the team requires a spinner, they often opt for those who contribute with the bat, such as Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell.

As a result, Patel has carved out a niche as an Asia specialist, with over 70% of his Tests played on the continent. He has been particularly successful in Sri Lanka, achieving his second five-wicket haul there recently, concluding with figures of 6 for 90 in the second innings.

Patel expressed some frustration at his limited appearances despite his impressive record. He stated, “The hunger grows more every time you don’t get an opportunity that you want. Every time you do get an opportunity, you’re pretty hungry.” This drive has allowed him to excel as an Asia specialist from New Zealand.

“As a spinner, you have the luxury of the ball doing a little more in these conditions,” Patel explained, noting the challenge of facing skilled players of spin in Asia. His strategy involves consistent performance, utilizing the wind, surface, and wicket pace to his advantage. In Galle, where spinners often benefit from the venue’s unique conditions, Patel has thrived, leveraging the strong ocean breezes and different seam phases effectively.

Throughout the tour, New Zealand spinners, including Patel, have benefited from the guidance of Rangana Herath, a former Sri Lankan spinner who serves as the team’s spin consultant. Herath has provided valuable insights to Patel about the conditions and strategies for success in Galle. Patel remarked, “It’s awesome having Rangana in our side… He’s been very successful at this ground.”

Herath’s impact was evident when Sri Lankan opener Dimuth Karunaratne attributed his second-innings wicket to Herath’s influence. Patel confirmed the benefits of having a consultant like Herath, given his similar stature and successful track record.
