Akshay Bhatia Gears Up to Defend Texas Open Title Before Masters

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Akshay Bhatia returns to TPC San Antonio this week as the defending champion of the Valero Texas Open, eager to improve on his previous performance and make a mark at the upcoming Masters Tournament. Bhatia’s journey back to San Antonio is made even more special by his engagement, which began when he met his fiancée here in 2022.
Last year, Bhatia captured victory in a thrilling playoff against Denny McCarthy, marking his second PGA Tour win and earning him a spot in the prestigious Masters. “A year went by so fast. To be here, and obviously my first time defending a tournament, it’s pretty cool. A lot of good memories. I’ve always loved this event, a very special place for me and my fiancée, who we met here in 2022,” Bhatia shared during a recent press conference.
Bhatia’s focus this week is two-fold: defend his title in Texas and prepare for Augusta National, where he hopes to improve upon his T35 finish in last year’s Masters. “I feel like it’s just another week. I have my mind really set on Augusta next week,” he stated, highlighting his calm approach to the demanding weeks ahead. The Texas Open holds deep sentimental value, serving as the backdrop for pivotal moments in his personal and professional life.
Since his win in San Antonio last year, Bhatia has maintained strong form, finishing third at multiple tournaments, including the Genesis Invitational. Currently 18th in the FedEx Cup standings, he has positioned himself well early in the season, aiming to build on his recent success.
Reflecting on last year’s playoff, Bhatia remarked, “I played so great the whole week. I honestly don’t know how I did it, shooting 20 under. Walking this course really brings back memories of the hard work I put in to earn that victory.” His return signifies not just a defense of his title, but a chance to build upon the momentum heading into Augusta.
While he has not secured a victory since then, Bhatia remains undeterred. His strategy includes focusing more on shot accuracy and mental resilience rather than relying on previous victories for confidence. “Last year, I was focused on trying to get into the U.S. Open based on my world ranking. This year it’s about enjoying the moment and improving every day,” he said.
The golf world is abuzz with speculation on whether Bhatia can defend his title, a feat achieved by only four players in the history of the tournament, including iconic figures like Arnold Palmer. Should he win this year, he could join the ranks of legends, further elevating his burgeoning career.
As he prepares for the Texas Open, Bhatia remains clear about his goals: defend his title and navigate the pressures ahead of the Masters. With his sights firmly set on golf’s biggest stages, the coming days promise to be exhilarating as he balances triumph and expectations.
